After winning four out of five games, the Illinois women's basketball team seemed as if it had taken a few steps forward.

But Sunday's lackluster loss at Purdue was a step back for a team that, at 4-11 in conference, needs every bit of momentum it can get heading into the Big Ten Tournament.

Jenna Smith assured reporters that Sunday's game against Penn State at the Assembly Hall will be different.

"When we played at Purdue, it wasn't us," she said. "We were kind of lackadaisical, we weren't showing the energy that we have shown in the games that we won."

Purdue women's basketball coach Sharon Versyp said Sunday's matchup with Illinois was one of her team's best offensive performances of the season.

Illinois coach Jolette Law knows her team probably had something to do with that.

While the Illini couldn't seem to stop Purdue, inside or out, freshman Macie Blinn stood out as having a particularly difficult defensive game.

"She needs to concentrate more on the defensive end," Law said of the guard. "Purdue did a good job of putting people in that could attack off the dribble."

The Illini took it, and now they are dishing it out.

After being swept by Ohio State and Wisconsin early in the season, the Illini beat Northwestern, 60-46, on Thursday evening to complete their second sweep in the last five days.

"It wasn't pretty, but we found a way to get it done," Illinois coach Jolette Law said.

The Illini have now won four out of five, and taking care of the ball has been key in the recent stretch.
