Letters to the Editor

I'm writing in reference to the front page article on Friday, May 1, 2009, and the 25 drug-related arrests. Given the gravity of this type of behavior, I would expect The Daily Illini to provide fair and balanced coverage of the events and happenings taking place on the campus.

With Earth Day coming up and the beauty of spring approaching, I wanted to write in and express how important the effects of global warming and climate action are to me as a Chicago voter.

I feel these are pivotal issues and integral to the citizens of my neighborhood of Rogers Park, the burgeoning metropolis of Chicago and the world. Speaking to my neighbors, our diverse backgrounds are linked by environmental concerns.

Remy Soni’s column criticizes the eight protesters gathered outside of the CIA information session on our campus. While he acknowledges their right to protest, he laments their supposed lack of respect for the agency. In particular, he objects to them dressing up as tortured prisoners, asking if this is “the kind of message” we want to be sending from our university. What seems to have upset Mr. Soni the most is the fact that the session had to be closed prematurely due to the disruptions.

Hybrid vehicles have become increasingly popular with every summer surge of gas prices over the last decade. This is due to a perception that hybrid vehicles are the cure-all to all of our energy problems in America. As a matter of fact, hybrids are not economically practical and are not more environmentally friendly than the non-hybrid cars that are on the market.

Remy Soni recently wrote an editorial in the DI that suggested that the groups that protested the CIA should not have "disrupted the informational process."

I would like to respond on behalf of the Campus Antiwar Network, the International Socialist Organization, Iraq Veterans Against the War, and other groups that protested the CIA on campus, to the article on 4/17 by Remy Soni.

I’d like to thank the DI for the article on the cruelty of puppy mills. Puppies and kittens in puppy and kitten mills are commonly housed in overcrowded, filthy, inhumane conditions and then are sold to pet stores.

Nearly a quarter of the University's undergraduate population has participated in study abroad programs. With this number increasing every year, the University should make an effort to make studying abroad a more affordable option for more students. Since the current economic climate has restricted the University's budget, I propose that the University increase funding for course abroad programs that take place during winter and summer breaks by reallocating their current budget.

Earth Day is a time we ought to think about the kind of planet we will leave for future generations. Unless we act, our children will inherit a world fundamentally different from the one we grew up in.

To prevent this we need to dramatically change the way we use and think about energy. Wind power is one of the best ways to clean up the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the climate that sustains us. Best of all, the wind energy sector stands to create millions of good-paying jobs and provide genuine energy independence.

Abstinence works every time; condoms don't. And they won't end AIDS. In response to the March 20 Daily Illini editorial cartoon by Jake Thompson, depicting Pope Benedict preventing condom use on the African AIDS epidemic: The cartoon implies that condoms are a plausible solution to AIDS in Africa ...Abstinence works every time; condoms don't. And they won't end AIDS.

Rather than considering the possibility of canceling the event, how about reaching out to the students? With the need for 150 more volunteers and a soon approaching deadline, marketing the positions to a group of over 40,000 undergraduate students is sure to be successful.

Amy Allen’s March 30 article raises some much needed discussion regarding the future of newspapers and journalism in the United States. However, her assumption that newspapers are innocent victims of the current economic climate is naïve, to say the least. The recent round of bankruptcies is only the latest in the long steady decline of the industry (For an excellent fictionalized account of such events, see Season 5 of the HBO program “The Wire”).

Gov. Quinn is doing the right thing by raising taxes. This deficit can no longer be ignored. After Jordan Harp's article ridiculed Gov. Quinn's plan to raise Illinois taxes, it later said, "Quinn likes to blame the last guy to hold his office for the debt the state faces." That's a bit hypocritical because the reason why he is raising taxes is so that the bureaucrats in Springfield can finally take charge of the budget instead of passing it from one administration to the other.

Today walking down Green Street, I noticed a large and chilling sticker out of the corner of my eye. A photograph of a smiling Barack Obama along with a blood-red shape, which while not distinct, clearly was a handgun. It was “aimed” at Obama’s head. Underneath was the text “Change is Kool!”

Apart from the tremendously upsetting idea that someone is placing stickers on this campus suggesting that the assassination of the first black U.S. president would be “kool,” another only slightly less upsetting thought popped into my head. Why hadn’t anyone else removed this?

The members of the Student Election Commission have violated their own procedures and bylaws in stating that they refuse to certify the results of the MTD referendum question. By making a statement of non-certification, the members of the SEC are attempting to influence the Board of Trustees' decision, which puts them in a precarious position as overseers of fair elections on campus.
