Jane Adams said she hopes Carbondale’s Department of Building and Neighborhood Services is ready for SIUC students to return to Carbondale this fall.
Adams, a local landlord and treasurer of the Arbor District Neighborhood Association, said despite the $35 rental housing inspection fee instituted in January 2008, the city is short on neighborhood inspectors.

Five years ago, Shema Jamaluddin quit her day job to coordinate fundraisers that support the local community as well as schools and orphanages in Bangladesh.

Starting Friday, a result of her efforts will begin as a five-week art class. The course will teach children and adults about art history and drawing techniques.
The proceeds from course costs will benefit For Kids’ Sake, a fundraising organization in partnership with Dayemi Tariqat, a group that provides financial assistance to Bangalesh orphanages and students.

The university is slowly but surely returning to normal following the aftermath of a May 8 storm that demolished a majority of the campus’ vegetation.

Brad Dillard, associate director of the Physical Plant, said the university reopened Thompson Woods last week and hopes to have the campus in regular shape by the beginning of the fall semester.

Nearly all of the university’s walkways, bridges and parking lots have been cleared of debris, Dillard said, and the university is now turning its attention to removing more than 300 tree stumps from campus grounds.
